    Using Book Studies for Leadership Development 

    A quick internet search of “leadership books” will result in thousands of titles. The content is out there, how are you using it? Book studies, long used in certain circles for camaraderie and intellectual discussion can be a great tool to develop leadership capacity in yourself and others. As a bonus, these studies require very little prep and reap large rewards. Jess Almlie, Vice President of Learning Experience at Discovery Benefits in Fargo has been using book studies on her team for years with great results and you can too! In this interactive session, Jess will share her own tips and tricks for successful book studies as well as the following:

    • Why book studies work for the modern learner
    • How to facilitate a book study for maximum development
    • What books are best for your own book study initiative


    Jess Almlie, Vice President of Learning Experience
    Discovery Benefits

    Jess Almlie is the Vice President of Learning Experience at Discovery Benefits. In this role, she is instrumental in developing and sharing the vision for effective learning both inside and outside the organization. Past roles include training and development, human resources, and higher education in Fargo-Moorhead as well as the Twin Cities. 

    Jess earned a bachelor's degree from Concordia College in Organizational Communication and a master’s in Educational Leadership from NDSU. She volunteers in the Fargo-Moorhead area as the Immediate Past President for the North Dakota Association for Talent Development and is the current Chair of the Fargo-Moorhead West Fargo Chamber’s Business Training Committee.

    In her spare time, Jess writes a weekly blog called “Next Step Leader” (www.jessalmlie.com) focused on small, practical steps leaders can take to continue developing their leadership capacity. 

    Jess lives in Moorhead with her two teenage children, entrepreneurial husband, and old hound dog, Lucy. She is obsessed with polka dots, superheroes and sunshine. She also regularly participates in cycling challenges on her Peloton® bike.

    STEP BY STEP LEARNING: ONLINE LEARNING PATHS (Fargo)

    If rolling out a single course isn’t structured or efficient enough why not try using learning paths? A learning path within your online learning can help a learner progress through and master a particular subject or program. In this session we will discuss the theory behind learning paths, the different types of learning paths, and how to use learning paths to framework your online courses.


    PRESENTERS

    Sabrina Olsen, Manager of Learning and Development GOLDMARK Property Management

    Sabrina is the Manager of learning and development at GOLDMARK property management, where she works with a team organizing, facilitating, and coordinating functional learning and development activities and initiatives for the organization. She has also worked as a Red Cross Intructional Trainer for the past 10 years teaching Community First Aid, CPR and Aquatics Safety courses. In her spare time she loves spending time reading, taking her dog for walks, and spending time with her family at the lake. She is passionate about learning and development and making the world work better together.


    Angela Jallo, Learning and Development Consultant
    GOLDMARK Property Management

    Angela has worked in Learning & Development for 12 years. In her Learning & Development Consultant role she has lead projects on implementing LMS systems and online learning for the organization, new applications for training resources, and software rollouts. In her spare time she spends time reading, time with family, attempting gardening, and taking weekend trips to some far out places.

    Increasing Impact and Influence through Body Language

    with Paula Graner

    By understanding effective communication through body language, you can learn to influence others and create an instant connections.  Developing your unique body language will make you look more confident, credible and charismatic. Successful leaders use body language to influence and communicate more effectively in business, leading to greater success. Learning and understanding the styles of body language will help you effectively communicate with others and deepen connections with colleagues, clients and family. 

    Paula Graner, president at GHR Consulting, has served in the talent management and development sector for more than two decades. She travels the region working with organizations ready to have crucial conversations and cultural transformation, and more importantly harassment-free environments. Graner, mother of three, is active in the community. Most recently, she founded the Master Network Chapter in Bismarck.

    Mentoring relationships are the single most powerful tool we have to develop talent and ourselves. However, mentoring can only create impact and drive results if five essential skills are used by mentors and mentees to optimize learning experiences. Do you know what those skills are? This mini-conference will dive into tools needed for mentoring success and show you how to use them. Join expert facilitator and mentoring pro Jenn Labin, Chief Talent & Diversity Officer at MentorcliQ and author of the book, Mentoring Programs that Work for an interactive afternoon.

    • You are a new or experienced mentor who wants to make the best impact possible and help others develop.

    • Interactive and engaging workshop focused on critical tools to maximize any mentoring experience (approx 3 hours). 
    • Panel of local of mentors and mentees talking about using the tools in their own mentoring experiences (approx 45 minutes). 
    • Networking social hour (5-6pm).


    Speaker and Facilitator - Jenn Labin

    Jenn Labin, Chief Talent & Diversity Officer at MentorcliQ has over 15 years of experience in talent development, training and design. Previously Jenn was the owner of TERP Associates, acquired by MentorcliQ in 2019. Combining TERP's expertise with MentorcliQ's award-winning mentoring software to expand mentoring content, training and value for customers.

    Jenn is the author of Mentoring Programs That Work, a unique approach to building scalable and sustainable mentoring programs. She is a regular presenter at the ATD International Conference, ATD chapters and MentorCom.

    Jenn has her BA from the University of Maryland Baltimore County in Digital Art, and her MA in Instructional Systems Design. She has earned credentials as a Certified Principal Evaluator (Kirkpatrick Evaluation), DISC-PIAV and Situational Leadership II Facilitator, as well as a certificate in Presentation Design from Duarte Design and Leadership Development.

    Besides mentoring, learning and development, Jenn is passionate about scuba diving, the environment, and spending time with family. Jenn lives near Baltimore, MD with her amazing husband, daughters, and a turtle named Godzilla

    Mary has over 20 years of experience in leadership and employee development, as well as consulting and sales experience. Mary has worked in the hospitality, healthcare, higher education, technology, finance and insurance industries. She is currently a Talent Development Partner at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her husband, Kevin, and their two children.
